Over 19,000 road mishaps with 392 deaths in Sabah
Kota Kinabalu: A total of 19,310 road accidents were recorded across the State last year. Out of the figure, a total of 392 cases involved fatal accidents and 132 cases of seriously injuries.

"Even though the statistics showed a reduction in number of by 28 fatal accidents compared to 2014 which recorded 420 deaths, there is still a need to further boost road safety awareness," said Sabah Road Safety Department Director Herdiansah Abdul Karim.

With this in mind, the department has teamed up with Sabah Shell to initiate a creative way of spreading the message through a Quick Response (QR) Code application to commemorate the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims here on Sunday.

Herdiansah said the theme this year is 'Medical Care, Investigation, and Justice' based on the five pillars of the road safety action plan by the World Health Organisation with focus on post-accident management.

"To further improve our road safety implementation programme, we have engaged Shell Sabah to come up with a creative approach to get the message across, all they have to do is to scan the QR code which can be found in nearly all Shell kiosks across the State.

"We hope the awareness would bring the number of accidents in Sabah to a minimum," he said, adding that the QR code will also provide a list of emergency numbers.

Also present was South Territory Shell Station Manager Annie Tan who said the QR code application also promotes five safety compliances at petrol stations on top of the seven road safety tips to reduce accidents.

"We are pleased that Herdiansah and his team have selected our site for the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims which is a new way of collaboration which we plan to implement in all our 76 kiosk stations across the State soon.

"We have also engage taxi companies to install the QR code application so that not only locals but tourists riding in their taxis can get the message and know what numbers to contact in case of emergencies," she said.

The programme also received support from 15 automotive club members from the Kelab Pemilik dan Peminat Perodua Kenari Malaysia as well as Kelab Saga Iswara Extreme Owners Club. "Our club members are avid automotive enthusiasts who spend a lot of time on the road," said Kelab Pemilik dan Peminat Perodua Kenari Malaysia Chairperson Ainiliza Usli.

"The QR code approach is different and I believe the initiative would certainly appeal to youths, because it is a simple yet very informative way of getting road safety tips.

"We have been invited several times by the Sabah Road Safety Department to participate in their road safety campaign which I think is a good way of boosting awareness among young drivers, especially with tips on proper tyre maintenance as well as emergency numbers to call," she said.
