Kota Kinabalu: Parti Warisan Sabah (Warisan) denied allegations that the big crowd it pulled on Sunday in Sandakan was motivated by promises of money for those who attended. Its Secretary General Loretto Padua Sipin Jr said it is saddening that certain parties had to resort to slander, probably because they felt threatened by the strong show of support given to the barely two-month old party.

It was reported that more than 8,000 people thronged the Dewan Hakka in Sandakan to meet and greet the party's leaders which included President Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal and Deputy Darell Leiking.

However, on Monday morning, a poster was circulated in the social media with the caption "Sandakan people disappointed the RM500 promised was unfulfilled" allegedly quoting one of the attendees who said he came from afar for the money only to be disappointed.

"Not only is this allegation slanderous to Warisan, it also insulted the people of Sandakan who truly wish for change.

This accusation actually suggested that the people are easily swayed by money. The truth is, these people came because they believed in the party's struggle and they wanted to see Umno and BN toppled in the next election.

I am saddened that some quarters actually found it acceptable to accuse decent people of coming to events because of money," he said.

He said instead of imagining things that would only further offend the people, the Government should help alleviate the burdens of the people who are bogged down by all sorts of troubles, economically and politically.

Loretto advised the perpetrator who came up with the poster and those actively involved in smear campaigns against Warisan to stop their pointless game because the people are already tired of their antics.

During the event, Shafie and several Warisan leaders gave speeches to the crowd on the purpose and the direction of the party.

Shafie also reportedly accepted 12,800 new membership applications from the people in Sandakan.
