Bridge under construction collapses: 1 dead
Kuala Lumpur: The Department of Occupational Safety and Health Malaysia (DOSH) has issued a stop-work order on construction at KL Eco City here after the collapse of an incomplete pedestrian bridge that killed one worker and hurt five others Wednesday.Brickfields district police chief Assistant Commissioner Shahrul Othman Mansor said the deceased was a Vietnamese.

"Four victims rescued by the Fire and Rescue Department are currently receiving treatment and work is underway to rescue the remaining victims," he said. One of them is a Sabahan.

It was learnt that the worker who died in the tragedy is believed to have drowned in the river when the construction structure gave way.

During the incident, the affected workers were having their lunch break under the bridge when it collapsed on them.

The bridge construction began six months ago.

One Bangladeshi worker trapped beneath the rubble has just been freed and is being rushed to the hospital for treatment.

Another worker had to have his leg amputated at the scene. The worker, 23-year old Rais Anjum from Pakistan, found himself trapped when the under-construction bridge collapsed.

When news came in that Rais had to have his legs amputated, some of the workers broke down in tears.

"It is cruel that he had to lose his legs, but at least he is safe," said the worker.

Shahrul said the project was about 80 per cent completed when the incident happened.

Police received a call about the incident about 4pm, he added.

The pedestrian bridge under construction was to link the up-and-coming KL Eco City to the Gardens shopping mall at Mid Valley here.

KL Eco City developer SP Setia Berhad said in a statement that the bridge gave way at about 3.30pm and expressed deep regret.

On its website, KL Eco City is described as a "world class city-within-a city" on 25-acres of prime land and is a mixed development of commercial, retail space and luxury residential property.
