Sandakan: A total of 41 prisoners and 50 family members as well as visitors were selected to participate in the Sandakan Prison Fellowship 'Angel Tree Love 2016' programme in conjunction with the Christmas celebration on Monday.Karamunting assemblyman Datuk Charles O Pang, who officiated at the programme, said such events could give a positive impact on the relations between inmates and their family members especially during festive seasons.

He hoped the event would be held at other times to give opportunity for selected residents to meet and celebrate any festival together.

Meanwhile, Sandakan Prisons director Zulkifli Abdul Manah said among the objectives of the programme were to treat prisoners so that they would not make the same mistake in future.

Meanwhile, a 63-year-old inmate met at the event said he was serving 10 years and six months for causing the death of his second wife and had five years left before he could be released.

He was determined to turn over a new leaf and to look after his family after serving his sentence.

"I do not want my family to follow in my footsteps," said the man, who has seven children and 12 grandchildren.

He intended to work in palm oil plantations so that his wife and children can live a good life.
