Kota Kinabalu: A total of 67 Kinabalu Commercial College (KCC) students graduated from Accountancy, Business, Tourism and Secretary Programmes at their graduation ceremony held here, Monday. In his speech, KCC Principal Vincent Chong congratulated the students for their achievement and reminded them that graduation is only the beginning of their career lives.

He said KCC is well-known among industries in the State and the college boasts a 100 per cent employment record of its students over the years.

"In order to keep up with industrial trends, starting next year, all KCC programmes will add a new learning module on 'online business or e-business' to equip our future graduates and suit the current and future industries online business needs.

"We also believe that this module will be able to make our future graduates more marketable," he said.

Additionally, he said, the college had also set up a new division known as 'Skill Training Division' to cater to Skills Development Department (JPK) programmes.

The programmes, he said, aim to provide opportunities to Form 3 and Form 5 leavers to continue their further studies and to fulfil the workplace needs especially in office skills.

"The first JPK office skills programme we offered is 'executive corporate secretary course' with 38 students who have completed the courses and graduated tonight. Next year we will be launching two more JPK office skills programmes namely Accounting and Office Administration courses," he said.

Skills courses emphasise more on practical skill namely hands on skill and less on theoretical knowledge.

This, he said, would be thoroughly beneficial to students and the industries.

"As we strive to become a developed nation, we would need to achieve at least 50 per cent of skilled workers in the workforce. But now, the number is hovering at 30 per cent only. So there is a huge opportunity for our youths to tap into," he said.

Chong also announced that the college will start offering the 'Diploma in Early Childhood Education' programme next year, aimed for those who wish to work as teachers in pre-schools and playschools.

He said the programme is designed for Form 5 (SPM or Senior Middle 3 or its equivalent), Form 6 (A levels, STPM or its equivalent), and existing Pre-school teachers with the relevant experience or qualifications.

The programme covers a broad spectrum of areas which include Curriculum Development for early childhood, safety, health and nutrition, music and performing arts, sports and fitness, designing preschool learning environment and language development in childhood, he said.

This programme, which is approved by Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and Ministry of Higher Education is in line with the government's effort to increase the proficiency of preschool teachers.

As the programme covers a vast scope of topics, students will be well trained to deal with preschool children.

After graduating from this programme, students can take on the position of Preschool Teacher, Preschool Head Teacher and Principal of Preschool.

The programme will also provide a firm foundation for those who wish to pursue higher qualification in this related fields of education, particularly to sub-specialise in the topics of interest related to early childhood care.

The course can be taken on either a full-time basis or part-time.
