Kota Kinabalu: The number of road fatalities in Sabah for December 2015 at 38 compared to 29 for the same period in 2014 shows the risk of road death increases during festive seasons and school holidays in line with the increase in traffic flow on the roads Statewide.Road Safety Department (JKJR) Sabah Director, Herdiansah Abdul Karim, said this was among the main reasons the JKJR was holding its road safety campaign this month in a bid to reduce the number of road accidents and fatalities.

He said the JKJR's road safety campaign was held with the fact that at year-end there will be more traffic due to the Christmas celebrations and school holidays.

"The aim of the programme today is to minimise the rate of road accidents, especially in the Kota Kinabalu area, as the district posted the highest rate of road accidents and fatalities last year."

The campaign was held Saturday at a Petron petrol station along the Lintas-Kolombong highway with the participation of various strategic partners, including Allianz Insurance, Sabah Skills and Technology Centre, the Fire and Rescue Department, Kota Bumi Sdn Bhd, Socso and the Sabah Road Transport Department (RTD).

Herdiansah said he hoped the JKJR's road safety programmes would be continued with the cooperation of corporate bodies such as Petron.

He added that 29 Petron retailers in the West Coast were in support of the programme.

"Thus we hope they would not only sell Petron products but also the road safety message to their customers who come to refill their vehicles at their stations," he said.

He added that as many as 253 high-impact road safety programmes were also carried out Statewide, which was an 11.3 per cent increase compared to 223 programmes carried out the previous year.

On the event, Herdiansah said they presented goodie bags (to motorists) including not only road safety messages but also fire safety messages from the Fire and Rescue Department together with information material from RTD and SSTC.

Other activities of the campaign are road safety advocacy through the distribution of road safety kit to Petron customers, exchange of old for new motorcycle helmets and exhibitions.

"It is my hope that through this campaign we can reduce the number of road accidents during this festive season.

It is my hope also that at the end of the year, the number of road fatalities will also end up being lower this year compared to last year."

He said as the focus was on high road fatalities, for next year JKJR will organise another road safety campaign in Lahad Datu during the Chinese New year celebrations as statistically it is the second highest district in the State in terms of road accident fatalities.
