Tuaran: Former Tuaran MP Datuk Monggoh Orow was among 165 new members of the United Pasokmomogun Kadazandusun Murut Organisation (Upko) who pledged their loyalty to the party's struggles on Friday night. Describing the move as "returning to his old home", Monggoh said he is confident that he could contribute more for the people if he is within the Barisan Nasional (BN) circle.

"Even though the people in the rural areas are provided with many facilities by the Government, they have yet to enjoy other amenities like the ones in the urban areas.

"As such, I decided to work together with leaders like Datuk Seri Madius Tangau (Upko acting president) and his party to contribute to the rural folk.

"I was the first treasurer-general for Sabah Democratic Party (PDS), which is now known as Upko…so there is nothing wrong for me to contribute my energy to the people and that motivates me to join this party," he said after submitting his membership form with others at a meet-the-people function, here, on Friday night.

The 70-year-old former PKR election operation director for Tuaran in the 13th General Election admitted that it is hard to help the people if he remained in the other political faction.

Monggoh won the Tuaran parliamentary seat in 1990 under PBS' ticket and he had held many positions in the Government such as Kota Kinabalu Municipal Council President, Permanent Secretary to the Finance Ministry and Deputy State Secretary.

He was previously reported to have expressed his intentions to retire from politics and focus on the preservation of the Suang Lotud language with him currently leading the Lotud Language Sustainability Organisation (Pelestarian).

Meanwhile, Tangau said the move by Monggoh and his followers will "make our other friends from the other faction, the opposition, aware that it is better to be with the Government."

"They can focus their energy and ideas to contribute to the country's development if they join the existing efficient BN government. "Tonight (Friday) others who had also submitted their membership forms are former opposition leaders and members in Tuaran.

"This is encouraging to see and it shows that the people prefer development, unity and a brighter future through the existing platform," he said.

Tangau also said Monggoh had met him on several occasions to convey his ideas to further aid the people.

"And some of his ideas are good, especially to help the villagers, such as small holders and rubber tappers."

Also present were Tuaran Barisan Nasional Chairman Datuk Seri Hajiji Mohd Noor who is also Local Government and Housing Minister and Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) Information Chief Datuk Jahid Jahim who is also Tamparuli Community Development Leader.
