Kota Kinabalu: Tired of being ordered around, a 49-year-old man beat up his wife. However, Ramzi Opong's action got him behind bars for 12 months after the Magistrate's Court found him guilty of assaulting the 43-year-old.

Ramzi on Thursday admitted before Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie to causing hurt to his wife at 6.10pm on Dec 10, 2016 in their bathroom at Kg Rampayan, Manggatal.

Prosecuting officer, Inspector Rasydan Jasni, told the court that the incident occurred because Ramzi was not satisfied with his wife ordering him to do household chores.

Ramzi punched her left arm, shoved her head against the wall and kicked her into the bathroom, causing the wife to fall.

The wife called for her father who lived next door and escaped from Ramzi thereafter.

She lodged a police report against Ramzi the following day as she could not stand her husband's behaviour.

Due to the attack, her arm swelled and had bruises and she also suffered cuts on her knees.

Ramzi committed an offence under Section 323 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to one year or a fine of up to RM2,000, or both, on conviction.

Meanwhile, another man charged with a similar offence will go on trial on Feb 21.

Magistrate Cindy Mac Juce Balitus set the date for Nicholas Benedict Barry, who is still maintaining his innocence to assaulting one Rosli Selamat at 6am on Nov 11, 2016 in a house at Taman Luyang, near here.

Inspector P. Nathan prosecuted.
