Ops Selamat launched, 400 cops monitoring
Kota Kinabalu: Police have embarked on the tenth series of "Ops Selamat" from Monday until Feb 3 to promote safety awareness in conjunction with the Chinese New Year. State Police Commissioner Datuk Ramli Din said the safety awareness campaign in Sabah is unique because it covers both land and sea.

"More than 400 personnel are involved in monitoring the situation throughout this period with the objective of ensuring smooth traffic flow and a safe journey for those returning to their hometowns for the holiday.

"Our marine team will be mobilised to conduct patrols in the waters, including public and private jetties, apart from engaging other departments as part of our integrated approach," he told a media conference after launching the Chinese New Year "Ops Selamat" at Oceanus Waterfront Mall, here, Monday.

He said the campaign focuses on reducing not only road accidents but also housebreaking during the festive season.

"Those leaving their homes vacant must make sure their houses are properly locked and inform their neighbours as well as police of their absence," he said, adding that they can inform the police by filling in the forms available for the purpose or via Rakan Cop.

He said they will enhance police presence at locations prone to accidents, adding that these locations cover 212 kilometres across 10 districts in the State.

"Focus will also be on motorists' attitude and common factors which may cause accidents, such as having not enough rest, using handphones while driving and driving vehicles which are not fit for long distances," he said.

A total of 688 road accidents involving 10 road fatalities were recorded during the Chinese New Year "Ops Selamat" campaign last year compared to a total of 16 road fatalities over the same period in 2015.

The highest number of road accidents were recorded in five districts over the same period last year, with Kota Kinabalu taking the lead with 224 cases, followed by Tawau with 80 cases, Sandakan 70 cases, Penampang 70 cases and Lahad Datu with 32 cases.

Also present were his deputy Datuk Razarudin Husain, Mayor Datuk Yeo Boon Hai, Sabah Road Safety Department Director Herdiansah Abdul Karim and Oceanus Waterfront Mall's Director Datuk Johnson Koh among others.
