15 years, 10 strokes for raping stepdaughter

Kota Kinabalu: A 31-year-old local, who raped his eight-year-old stepdaughter, was sentenced to 15 years' jail and ordered given 10 strokes of the cane.Sessions Court Judge Azreena Aziz handed the sentence to the labourer after he pleaded guilty to the charge against him.Azreena also ordered the man placed under police supervision for two years after completing his jail sentence.

The man had raped the minor at 9am on Sept 13, 2016 at a house in Sipitang.The offence, under Section 376(3) of the Penal Code, carries a jail term of between eight years and 30 years, and whipping, on conviction.The man, who was not represented, asked for a lenient sentence saying he has family to look after and that he came from a poor family.Deputy Public Prosecutor Husna Abdul Halim urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence on the grounds that the man had committed a serious and heinous offence.
