Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) is disappointed with the outcome of the Prime Minister's recent visit to Sandakan. Its Chief Christina Liew said all the PM did was launch the Taman Batu Sapi People's Housing Programme and saying that the Government has agreed to extend the runway at the Sandakan Airport to accommodate bigger aircraft such as the Airbus 330.

"No attention was paid to the distressing condition of the Duchess of Kent Hospital to the detriment of the people's health," she said in a statement, Wednesday.

She likened the "runway extension" announcement to an election bait, saying it timed with the impending 14th General Election. "If the BN Government had really cared about the Sandakan people's well-being, it would have carried out the much-needed extension much earlier, and not when elections are around the corner," she said.

Liew, who is Api Api Assemblywoman, said the Federal Government has blatantly ignored the pressing need to upgrade the healthcare facilities in the Duchess of Kent Hospital.

"Even Budget 2017 has conspicuously failed to address the need to improve the operating theatres, increase the number of ambulances and repair all broken-down lifts in the hospital.

"Surely the Health Minister is aware that the Hospital is in a bad shape but he chooses not to visit the place each time he comes to Sabah," she pointed out.

She proffered two reasons for the government's continued turning a blind eye to the condition of the Sandakan Hospital.

"Either the Government is grossly lacking in funds to improve the deteriorating hospital or it is 'punishing' the people of Sandakan for having supported DAP in the 13th General Election in 2013," she said.
