Kota Kinabalu: An array of exciting activities will be held during the Earth Hour 2017 celebration in the city, this Saturday (March 25).Mayor Datuk Yeo Boon Hai said the celebration will be conducted at the Segama Waterfront from 2pm until 10pm and will be officiated by Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, Datuk Edward Yong.

"Among the activities that will be held during the celebration is a low power entertainment by the Alamesra Youth-Prep volunteers and WWF as well as buskers from Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) and the Sabah Creative Industry Group Movement (SCIGM)," he said during a press conference, here, on Tuesday.

He added, the 11km Earth Hour Night Ride will also be conducted and about 300 people are expected to take part in it.

"The ride will be flagged-off by the guest of honour from Hyatt Regency Kinabalu and the participants will then ride towards the City Mosque's roundabout before making their way back to the hotel.

"This year, we will also introduce the decorated bicycle competition for the Night Ride participants which apply the energy-saving concept in their bicycle lighting."

Apart from that, there will also be a robot creation competition, iconic building creation contest and the Mr and Miss Creative competition.

"There will also be an appearance by cosplayers who will convey the message of Earth Hour celebration among the public, especially children to enhance their awareness," he said.

According to Yeo, the lights that will be switched off during the main event of the celebration from 8.30pm-9.30pm are the street lights along Likas Bay until UMS roundabout, the street lights along Segama Complex, Segama Waterfront, Sinsuran, the street lights along Jalan Tun Razak, the city centre until the Karamunsing flyover, lights on City Hall's premises and the street lights along Jalan Mat Salleh until Tanjung Aru First Beach.

"However, we hope that premise owners, both commercial and residential buildings will support the programme by switching off their lights during the said period."

The City's Earth Hour 2017 celebration is jointly organised by the City Hall, Hyatt Regency Kinabalu and WWF Malaysia.

City Hall had been observing Earth Hour since 2011. The initiative was introduced in Sydney, in 2007 as an advocacy programme towards tackling global warming. - Ricardo Unto
