Kota Kinabalu: A jobless Filipino, who snatched handphones from two women at a shopping complex here last week, was jailed a total of six years on Wednesday.Mohd Shi Ben, who holds an IMM13 document, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Cindy Mc Juce Balitus to committing the offence at the Centre Point Sabah complex here on March 11.

He was sentenced to three years' jail on the first count of stealing a handphone from one Sabturiah Tei Teck Sen on the first floor of the complex at 8.30pm and handed another three years' jail on the second count of stealing one Syarfa Md Hassan's handphone at 9pm.

The court ordered Mohd Shi to serve the sentence concurrently and ordered him referred to the Immigration Department thereafter.

Earlier, prosecuting officer Inspector James Paran told the court that prior to the incident, Sabturiah was walking alone from work when her handphone which she had placed in her trouser pocket was snatched by Mohd Shi.

A security guard, who witnessed the incident, gave a chase and managed to apprehend Mohd Shi.

In the second incident, Syarfa realised her gadget which she had placed in her knapsack was stolen at 5.30pm.

She called her number at 9pm and a policeman answered, informing her that her gadget was found with a man, who was arrested for stealing someone's handphone.

Each offence under Section 379 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to seven years or fine, or both, on conviction.

Meanwhile, another Filipino was sentenced to three months' jail after he admitted to having a motorcycle believed to have been stolen.

Nazpal Zakaria, 28, who was arrested behind a petrol kiosk at Km 16 in Tebobon, failed to give a reasonable explanation as to how he had obtained the machine which was reported missing on Jan 23.

He had committed an offence under Section 22A of the Minor Offence Ordinance, which provides for a RM100 fine or three months' jail on conviction.

Paran said Nazpal had three previous convictions and was jailed four months with one stroke of the cane by the Sessions Court earlier for staying in the State illegally.

The court ordered Nazpal to serve the sentence consecutively with the jail term handed by the Sessions Court.
