Sabah students to make up 10pc of IPT target

Lahad Datu: Some 5,638 students in Sabah have been successfully placed in institutes of higher learning (IPT) through the Jelajah Pendidikan Bumiputera (JPB17) implemented in five districts in the state.This followed 6,500 applications received during a roadshow attended by more than 12,000 people in five districts namely, Kota Marudu, Kota Belud, Keningau, Sandakan and Lahad Datu.

Bumiputera Education Main Committee Chairman Prof Emeritus Tan Sri Ir Dr Sahol Hamid Abu Bakar in a press conference at JPB17 roadshow at Lahad Datu, Wednesday, said this programme received overwhelming response from the students.

Sahol said those who attended the roadshow are among the target groups and were pleased as through this roadshow, the children in Sabah would be able to get a place and pursue their study.

He said that in the previous series of JPB, 100,000 applications were received but only 37,000 managed to get placements.

Therefore, he said, JPB17 was improved by involving more parties or agencies such as Bank Rakyat and Yayasan Peneraju which will provide initial financing while further funding could be made through PTPTN.

According to Sahol, JPB17 that ended in Lahad Datu as their last roadshow in Sabah will be continue in Selangor and other states with a target amount of 50,000 students that will get placement as stipulated by the Prime Minister.

Earlier in his speech, Sahol said JPB17 is a special project by the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razak, aimed to help Bumiputera students further their studies at IPTs throughout the country.

He said they were targetting SPM and STPM leavers as well as Matriculation and Foundation students.

He hoped the students would take advantage of the opportunity and initiative of the Prime Minister.

Meanwhile, Silam Umno Chairman of Education bureau, Datuk Mohd Basri Ab Gaffar representing Silam Umno Head of Division, Datuk Mohd Yusof Apdal said he was pleased with the holding of such programme in Silam.

He said that students should seize the opportunity offered by the government and be grateful as through the government's initiative, more students could enter IPTs and pursue their studies for a better future.

"Such programme is in line with the PM's aspiration to assist the less fortunate to pursue their studies as he knows that education is the most important aspect that could change the future of children.

"Therefore, students should grab the oppotunity given through this programme so that they will be get placement jn IPT and pursue their studies," he said, adding that the programme is among the efforts undertaken by the government to upgrade education in Sabah.

In the meantime, a total of 15 institutions including UMS, UiTM, Politeknik Kota Kinabalu, Giatmara, Kolej Komuniti, Kolej Universiti Agro Sains Malaysia, UNIKL, IKM, KPTM, Tabung Haji and others participated in the roadshow, held at Dewan Sri Perdana.

Also present at the roadshow are MAEPS Chaiman who is also the Puteri Umno Malaysia Vice-Chief, Dato' Zahida Zarik Khan, Chairman of Gerakan Pendidikan Bumiputera Malaysia, Dato' Mohd Faizal Daud, CEO Of Yayasan Destini Anak Bangsa, Dato' Mohd Aizuddin Mohd Ghazali, Sabah Puteri Umno Vice Chief, Zakiah Kalipuya, Silam Umno Division Secretary, Ir. Rajesh Datuk Mohd Yusof and Silam Puteri Umno leader, Zuraidah Asdain.
