Probe shows no quarry op at Manggatal village

Kota Kinabalu: A quarry operator that has a valid licence has stopped carrying out activities in Kg Mansiang, Manggatal for the past two years, based on an inspection at the site following a complaint that the operator has encroached into State land.Lands and Surveys Department Director Datuk Safar Untong said a team from the department led by Tonny Robot went to the site recently to investigate following the claim made in a newspaper report on March 25.

It was reported that the operator has been active at the site for over 10 years and had allegedly gone over the boundary.

Safar said the team met a villager of Kg Mansidang named Limpagau Somudin who was also in the photo published in the newspapers last Saturday.

"Limpagau led the team to the concerned site. The team found out that the complained site was a border between the quarry site of the company and a State land. They found no heavy machinery and quarry activities being carried out there.

"Tonny interviewed Limpagau and the latter informed that the quarry operator has not been carrying out activities at the site for the past two years," Safar told Daily Express.

He said Limpagau also admitted that he did follow the complainant (Missi) to the site but he (Limpagau) was not informed that the purpose of the visit.

He said Limpagau also said he was unaware about the complaint.

In fact, Safar said Limpagau was surprised when being informed by the team that his picture appeared in the newspaper report.

He said the enforcement team of the department will continue to monitor quarry activities at the concerned site in Kg Mansiang to ensure the operator cum company comply with the terms and conditions stipulated in the licence.

Safar assured that appropriate action will be taken against the operator if it violates the terms and conditions in the licence. - Hayati Dzulkifli
