Kota Kinabalu: Parti Warisan Sabah Vice President Junz Wong is disputing the statement by Umno Semporna leader Datuk Ainal Fattah that Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman rescued Yayasan Sabah from a deal that involved Warisan President Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal 20 years ago.He said in a statement that the State Government granted permission to the licensee (NBT), under Sustainable Forest Management License Agreement (Section 15(1) Forest Enactment 1968), in 1997, to plant, re-plant, rehabilitate and harvest forests under the principles of sustainable forest management and environmental conservation for economic and social purposes.

"In short, the licensee was given a contract known as the FMU2 with the purpose of replanting forest.

"NBT forest management unit 2 (FMU2) covers 250,000 acres in the North of Sabah, Paitan and Sugut Forest Reserve," he said.

On Thursday, Musa was quoted as saying that the planting of trees led to 240,000 hectares placed under the Sustainable Forest Management for the conversation of Orang Utans that is also part of the broader Heart of Borneo due to its rich biodiversity.

At the same time, he said efforts have been put in place to recreate healthy and productive forests in these and other forest reserves, each with their own management plans.

Junz said he heard rumours that FMU2 has been converted into oil palm plantation and whether this was approved by the CM and as to who owned NBT today.

"FMU2 have changed the name of the company from The North Borneo Timbers Corporation Sdn Bhd (NBT) to Eco-Plantations Sdn Bhd.

"Who owns Eco-Plantations today? If indeed FMU2 was converted into oil palm plantations, then we have reason to believe that more FMUs might have been converted," he said, adding that turning forests into oil palm plantations cannot be considered as saving Yayasan Sabah.

"If it was true that FMU2 had been converted (into oil palm plantations), then there is very strong reason why Shafie wants to save Yayasan Sabah by restructuring and revamping it for the sake of Sabah and the future generations."
