94 screened in ops at squatters

Kota Kinabalu: A total of 94 people comprising Filipinos and Indonesians were screened during an integrated operation led by the city police, Friday. The six-hour operation which ended at about 7.30am was conducted in six locations involving rented premises, kongsi houses, squatter settlements in Tanjung Aru, Inanam, Manggatal and Telipok.

It involved three officers and 94 personnel from the police, auxiliary police, National Registration Department, City Hall and Rela.

City Police Chief ACP M. Chandra said of the figure, a total of 44 Filipinos comprising 10 men, nine women, 12 girls and 13 boys, aged between seven months and 50-years-old were detained for having no valid documents.

Two people were also roped in after they were tested positive for drugs.

The operation aims to prevent crime in conjunction with the Deputy Prime Minister's visit as well as to eradicate crime in locations with the potential of being a hub for crime and drug distribution activities particularly in Sembulan, Inanam, Manggatal, Telipok and the city centre.

City Hall also marked and demolished squatter houses during the operation, while those from the Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd disconnected illegal wiring connections in squatter settlements. - Sherell Ann Jeffrey
