PCS prepared to chart own path: Bumburing
Kota Kinabalu: Parti Cinta Sabah (PCS) President Datuk Wilfred Bumburing (pic) is not overly concerned over the news that Parti Warisan Sabah assemblymen changed their minds over who they thought should be the official Opposition Leader in the State Legislative Assembly. In fact, he said, this showed the allegations on social media that PCS was "baited" by Warisan had proven to be malicious and insidious in nature.

"PCS is a party of uncompromising integrity and will not tolerate any questionable moves by any party; either friends or foes," he said.

Bumburing was responding to the news that at least six opposition assemblymen have backed Api-Api Assemblywoman Christina Liew to be the official Opposition Leader in the House, rejecting the continued appointment of Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah President Datuk Lajim Ukin.

Bumburing revealed that during the voting to choose the official Opposition Leader in the House, he garnered five votes with all three Warisan assemblymen voting for him and that Kapayan Assemblyman Dr Edwin Bosi also chose him. The other vote came from himself.

He also learned that Liew had three votes; one from her and the other two from Inanam Assemblyman Dr Roland Chia and Sri Tanjong Assemblyman Chan Foong Hin.

Bingkor Assemblyman Datuk Dr Jeffrey Kitingan abstained while Lajim stood alone.

Nevertheless, despite having the majority of the vote, Bumburing was overlooked with the Speaker deciding to maintain Lajim as the Opposition Leader.

"Because of dissatisfaction that arose from the decision of the Speaker, I and three assemblymen met the Speaker for his explanation to which the Speaker affirmed to us his ruling.

"I wish to say that prior to the voting there was no meeting or discussion and the votes by the individual assemblyman were decided on their own free will based on their wish to change the Opposition Leader to someone they think can lead the opposition members effectively," he said.

Therefore, Bumburing said the decision by the three Warisan assemblymen to switch their support to Liew is their own and there is no need to debate about it as Sabah is a democratic State and freedom of expression must be upheld.

They represent the people and they belong to the people and therefore let the people make their judgment, he said.

More importantly in his mind, said Bumburing, is the chaos he saw within the United Sabah Alliance (USA) following this voting process.

"It showed that Pakatan Harapan is largely intact, Parti Warisan Sabah assemblymen stayed together while the assemblymen in the USA were in disarray. This surely swayed the imagination of the people on the state of affairs within the alliance," he said.

Furthermore, he said, the speeches made by some opposition representatives during the recent State Assembly sitting were clearly understood by the people as to their respective parties' direction.

He added that PCS is fully aware of the frustration and hope of the people for change and political leaders, especially in the opposition, must not betray them and must offer a sincere and honest struggle.

"The people, especially those who crave for a change, want to see a united opposition without which, our vision to topple the Umno-led BN government would not be achieved," he said.

In view of this, he said PCS will convene a Supreme Council meeting next week to discuss its next course of action, taking into consideration the current political situation in the State.

"If necessary, the party is always prepared to chart our own path," he said.
