Christopher finishes third

Kota Kinabalu: Youngster Christopher James missed the chance to capture his first Open title outside Sabah in a three-way playoff at the Johor Amateur Open played over the weekend at the Horizon Hills Golf and Country Club.He carded a three-day total of 224 to join the sudden death battle with Malaysia Golf Association players Muhd Afif Muhd Razif and Rhaasrikanesh Kanavathi.The title was finally decided in the second playoff which was won by Afif, and Christopher finished in third place on countback with second place going to Rhaasrikanesh.

Despite the agony of missing the title, it was a morale boosting performance from the 16-year-old who had gone there on his own expenses apart from the entry fee which was borne by Sabah Golf Association."I am happy with the result despite failing to lift the title as my target was only a top five finish to improve my world amateur golf ranking. Christopher who won the 20th Sabah Golf and Country Club (SGCC) Amateur Open title in March said he is now looking forward to play in the 33th Sabah Amateur Open at the Keningau Golf and Country Club starting this Friday (April 28).Meanwhile, fellow Sabahan Tham Soot Yuet who played for Universiti Utara Malaysia also ended in third place in the ladies nett event with her score of 225. – GL Oh
