Sabah lasses capture 3 golds on maiden appearance

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah's young dancers captured three gold medals in their maiden appearance at the 2nd KLDSA Malaysia Open DanceSports Championship 2017 held in the Ara Damansara Grand Pacific Event Hall on Sunday.The gold medals were won by Hazel Meyriel Alban (10) from SK St. Francis Convent, Shania Myriam Koshy (10) from SK Mutiara, Kota Kinabalu and Ningsari Atiqah Ali (12) from SJK (C) Chung Hwa, Kota Kinabalu.

Hazel took the gold in the Latin Solo Newcomer Juvenile Girls (11 years and below) Jive - Group B category and she also took the bronze for Latin Solo Newcomer Juvenile Girls (11 years and below) ChaChaCha - Group C.

Shania Myriam Koshy won the Latin Solo Newcomer Juvenile Girls (11 years and below) Jive - Group A title and a silver for Latin Solo Newcomer Juvenile Girls (11 years and below) ChaChaCha - Group D while Ningsari Atiqah Ali came top in the Latin Solo Newcomer Junior Girls (15 years and below) Jive – Group C.

Sabah had five representatives in the competition with Sonia Alyssa Gill (11) from SJK (C) St. James, Likas finished fourth for Latin Solo Newcomer Juvenile Girls (11 years and below) Jive - Group B and seventh for Latin Solo Newcomer Juvenile Girls (11 years and below) ChaChaCha - Group F while Shanne Alyssa Bonaface Godfrey (12) from SK St. Francis Convent, Kota Kinabalu took seventh place for Latin Solo Newcomer Junior Girls (15 years and below) ChaChaCha -Group B.

SBDA President John Chong who led the team with coach Camelia Devi Lasmana was impressed with the result achieved by the girls.

"I am very happy they managed to win medals considering that it was their first time to compete outside the states.

"We did not set any target for them and to win three golds was an exceptional achievement.

We will put in more efforts, especially to improve the weak areas, and we will also train more athletes to represent the state as well," he said when contacted.

John who is a World DanceSport Federation licence adjudicator A was also one of the judges for the National Grade A ranking and open events in the championship. – GL Oh
