Kota Kinabalu: Matta, the country's number one travel fair, will be back in Suria Sabah from May 12 to 14. Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (Matta) Sabah Chapter organising chairwoman Alicia Gomez said 120 booths have been taken up by 50 exhibitors.

According to her, these companies are focused on inbound and outbound travel, travel related firms, airlines, banks, hotels, tourism boards, tourism colleges and non-governmental organisations, as well as the Malaysian Aviation Commission.

"Matta Fair is expected to boost the local travel industry as air connectivity is dependent on two-way traffic between different destinations.

"Consumers can expect unbelievable low fares to Asean and East Asia destinations," she said.

Matta Sabah expects some 80,000 visitors to turn up for the fair, adding that various programmes had also been planned for the three day event.

Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun will grace the occasion.

"There will be many shows and activities during the three days and lots of lucky draws to be won by those who spend RM500 and above at the fair.

Lucky draw prizes range from return airlines tickets from Kota Kinabalu to Taipei, Hong Kong, Ho Chi Minh, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur and from Kuching to Pontianak sponsored by AirAsia, Silk Air, Royal Brunei Airlines, Dragon Air and Malaysia Airlines, and complimentary vouchers to visit local tourist destinations and hotel stay," she said.

A NGO, Clap for Joy, a non-profit charity group to help underprivileged cleft lip and palate (CLAP) children born in Sabah, will also be participating to promote their "CLAP Lives MATTER Awareness Campaign" from May 12 -14, she said.

Gomez said Matta Fair also provides practical training for tourism students to gain exposure in promoting consumer fairs and managing an event.
