Putatan: Sabah needs to have its own fish landing complex under the Malaysian Fisheries Development Board (LKIM) to facilitate fishermen especially traditional fishermen to land their catch.Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Yahya Hussin said it is timely for the Ministry of Agriculture via LKIM to consider providing the fish landing complex for Sabah fishermen as the agency has provided such facility to fishermen in Sarawak.

"Sabah has yet to have its own fish landing complex to facilitate fishermen especially the traditional fishermen to load and land their catch.

"Hence, I will apply for funding from the Federal Government through the ministry to construct a fish landing complex in the State," he said.

Yahya who is also Agriculture and Food Industry Minister said this after officiating at the presentation of RM300 cash monthly living allowances to almost 1,000 traditional fishermen at the Pasir Putih multipurpose hall, Thursday.

The recipients are members of the Fishermen Association Area (PNK) for Kota Kinabalu that covers Putatan, Kota Kinabalu, and Sepanggar.

Yahya who is also Petagas Assemblyman said he has identified about 50 acres in the district suitable to build the complex.

In a related development, he expressed concern over fish bombing still happening in Sabah waters.

He urged the fishermen not to resort to using handmade bombs to catch fish as such illegal methods would kill the fish fries and may deplete their source of income in coming years.

Yahya also called on the public to give full cooperation by channelling information and tips to the enforcement authorities if they hear or see anyone buying basic materials to make the fish bombs so that immediate action can be taken.

At the same time, he urged the enforcement authorities like the police, Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), police and marine force to conduct regular patrols and take action against fishermen found using fish bombs to catch the fish.

"I am also calling on trawlers not to encroach coastal waters that are normally the source of income for traditional fishermen.

"These trawlers that have deep-sea licences should just do their fishing activities at deep sea as they are equipped with sophisticated fishing equipment and boats compared to the traditional fishermen who use small boats," he said. – HD
