Kota Kinabalu: There has been no change to the list of candidates shortlisted by MCA Kota Kinabalu division to stand in Luyang state seat in the 14th general election. Its chief Datuk Agnes Shim said there is only one name, being that which was decided a couple years ago.

"At that time, there was only one name proposed. It's still only one name. The division has not made any changes (to the list)," she said, without disclosing the identity of the potential candidate.

She said the division would however, leave the final decision to the party's central leadership on who they think is best to be fielded. "Whatever the decision of the party's top leadership, we'll abide," she said.

Shim, who is also State MCA Wanita chief, however, said the division insists on being represented by one of their own and not a "parachute candidate".

She said this during the division's annual general meeting last Thursday that was officiated by MCA Youth chief cum Deputy Education Minister II Datuk Chong Sin Woon.

The Luyang seat was won by Dr Hiew King Cheu on the opposition DAP ticket in the last general election.

In the contest, he defeated Shim who stood for BN-MCA and two others. Hiew, subsequently, joined the MCA.

In January, Datuk Francis Goh reportedly said that Sabah MCA had shortlisted three candidates for Luyang seat.

The State MCA deputy chairman named them as Hiew, Shim and Shim's daughter, Dr Pamela Yong who is a UK-trained orthodontist.

"It's up to the party leadership to decide who they think should be the candidate for Luyang," said Dr Pamela when asked if she was the preferred choice.

Sabah MCA contested two seats in the last election, the other being Kepayan where it also lost to the DAP.

The party's candidate in Kepayan is most likely to be Goh who has not only made public his desire to contest but also have been actively working on the ground and heavily investing his personal resources to win back the seat for the Barisan Nasional.

Party president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai had said that MCA had shortlisted its candidates for the general election with 50 percent of them being new faces. - Leonard Alaza
