A record golden haul

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah masters athletes clinched a record 61 gold, 26 silver and 24 bronze medals at the just concluded 31st Malaysian International Open Masters Athletics Championships (Miomac) held in Kuching from July 22-23.They dominated the two-day event that saw the participation of some 800 athletes including those from India, Singapore and Indonesia.

Juliana Gumpil, Lucy Yong and Alfred Lajawa who is in his eighties were the toasts of the team by winning four golds each while six others led by the Sabah Masters Athletics Association President Aliudin Jumaat with Doly Lukang, Gilbert Daladin, Maulani Diman, Tay Yu Eng and Cecilia Maksimon each contributed three golds.

The two gold medals winners were Christina Labanjing, Mathmod Alidin, Charles Linggam, Ramlan Goddos, Narul Andau, Julius Komuning and Saidi Kailu while the rest of the individual gold medals came from Isidore Amin, Erine Sinuel, Mordiana Abdullah, Maryem Joinol, Vironica Elau, Pirin Berangin, Kimih F Monjitol, Adeline Umbul, Joney Baragang, Liaw Yin Von, Teo Chen Lung, Paul Fung, Abd Rashid Matajam and Vitalis Herman.

The contingent also took home three relay golds through the women's 4x100m team (Lucy Yong, Erine Sinuel, Mordiana Abdullah, Juliana Gumpil), women's 4x400m team (Isidore Amin, Margaret Petrus, Erine Sinuel, Cecilia Maksimon) and the men's 4x400m team (Clarence Tami, Jamais Jumin, Cyril Misong, Teo Chen Lung).

Aliudin said it was their best performance since 2015 where they won a total of 57 gold medals.

"I am very happy with the result and congratulation to all the athletes, and I also would like to thank team manager David William who has been working very hard to ensure we achieve our 60-gold target."

Aliudin also expressed his gratitude to Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Tawfiq Abu Bakar Titingan and his Ministry, Sabah Sports Council, Sabah Sports Board and others who gave their support to the 80-member squad to participate in this year's meet. - GL Oh
