Kota Kinabalu: Kota Kinabalu Umno Youth movement on Saturday suggested that the Proton-Geely carmaker build its plant in Sabah. Its Chief Mohd Bahrin Abd Karim said Sabah is strategically located in the BIMP-EAGA region which has about 60 million people.

He said Umno Youth KK opined that it was time for Sabah to have an automotive factory to seize the potential of the motor vehicle market within the BIMP-EAGA region.

"The BIMP-EAGA region covers Brunei Darussalam, Sabah/Sarawak in Malaysia, Kalimantan in Indonesia and South Philippines," he said at the joint opening of Umno Kota Kinabalu, Youth, Wanita and Puteri annual delegates meeting at Maktab Sabah, Saturday.

Mohd Bahrin said within 10 years Sabah will have a world-class port at Sepanggar and Pan Borneo Highway which could facilitate networking provinces in BIMP-EAGA.

Meanwhile, Kota Kinabalu Umno Wanita Chief Datuk Rushimah Zakaria urged all parties not to be easily influenced by the opposition party's demands of "Sabah for Sabahans."

According to her, such slogans not only break existing unity but also is a step backward.

"We need to look at the far more challenging future ahead of us, we need to build closer ties and cooperation with the leader," she said in her speech, which was read by Kota Kinabalu Umno Wanita Vice Chief Nuirya Muammil.

Rushimah said all parties need to realise that without the good relations and solidarity that has been existing, it is very difficult for Sabah to progress and develop as enjoyed by today.
