Kota Kinabalu: State police want another battalion to be based in Kunak to strengthen security against external threats along the east coast border.Internal Security and Public Order Department (KDNKA) Director CP Datuk Seri Zulkifli Abdullah appealed to the Government to consider the request to address the current lack of manpower.

"Although the General Operation Force (GOF) has five battalions, we are still lacking in manpower," he told a press conference during his official visit to GOF headquarters in Kinarut on Monday.

He said currently, the State has been getting assistance from GOP teams deployed from Peninsula Malaysia and Sarawak but by having a new battalion this will no longer be necessary.

He also said that it will save cost to deploy personnel from the other two regions.

Other than a new battalion, he also requested for RM12 million allocation for maintenance of boats and land vehicles.

He said the fund is needed especially in the east coast for the forces will not be able to respond as quickly as possible if they are using vehicles that are not well maintained.

"RM10 million is for the boats and RM 2 million is for the vehicles and this is for Sabah alone as we have a lot of boats in the State.

"If we are not able to use some of the vehicles it will affect our ability when we are carrying out an operation," he said.

He added that the current forces will also be undergoing new training tactics to overcome unwanted threats in the future as the police force needs to be versatile and capable to do multitasking and not concentrate into doing a single duty.

The initiative to carry out new training for police like the GOF will not be an easy task but it is an initiative that has to be carried out, he said.

"It is not easy to retrain the force but we must try to ensure that even the GOF will know the basic police work," he said.

On joint military training with other countries, Zulkifli said it is important and would be held from time to time. - Jeremy S. Zabala
