Tawau: Parti Warisan pledged it will not oppress other religions if it topples Barisan Nasional in Sabah as the Quran prohibited this. Its President, Datuk Seri Shafie Hj. Apdal said this to over 1,000 guests at a dinner organised by the party, here, stressing that the party sees Sabahans as Sabahans minus their religious or ethnic backgrounds.

The former Umno Supreme Council member and Rural Development Minister was in the district to accept some 157 new members. He said Warisan aims to take over the State leadership while leaving West Malaysia to other opposition parties.

"Let's have Sabahans control of this state instead of Kuala Lumpur and we need to be brave in doing so", he said. He did not elaborate.

Shafie also claimed that around 80 per cent of State Umno members had left to join Warisan.

He urged the rest to follow suit.

"If Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed and many current opposition leaders from Umno can leave the party, why can't you?", he asked.

He also claimed that some 70 per cent of KadazanDusun had also joined Warisan with Chinese joining in larger groups which he estimated to be around 100,000.

"Warisan is a multiracial party as seen in our leaderships line-up and we fight for Sabah so we can decide our own destiny", Shafie said. He urged the majority Malaysian Chinese guests at the dinner to follow the trend during voting.

On development, Shafie said the state has sufficient funds to bring better development to Sabah.

As for the district, he said the town remain stagnant and caused many young Malaysian to look for better opportunity in other towns or cities.

"We produce palm oil but lack downstream industries to create more work for young Sabahans.

"We can do that by producing our own end products from such oil instead of having to buy them back".

Shafie said such move would not only makes the district more self-sufficient but bring about more job opportunities and create more vocational schools so that young Sabahans can learn skills suited for the work opportunity presented.

Among those present during the meet were Datuk Jaujan Sambakong and Junz Wong.
