Caution on uploading unverified matters

Papar: People have been strongly advised not to simply upload any unsubstantiated information or incident related to crime and public order in any social media network that could cause public anxiety.District Police Chief DSP Ladamah Sulaiman said it is imperative for the public to check with the police or relevant authorities that may be investigating the case to get a clear picture.He said anyone found spreading fake information, especially those that causes public panic and worry, face stern action under Section 233 of the Communication and Multimedia Act.

"Don't simply upload and spread uncertain facts or information in social media sites. Instead, check with the police or the authorities concerned to avoid confusion and action," he said.Ladamah issued the advice in response to an alleged kidnapping attempt involving a 14-year-old girl at 11pm in Taman Limauan, in Kinarut, on Wednesday, that went viral in Facebook and WhatsApp on Thursday.The posting claimed that the teenager was pulled into a black Hilux by three men but managed to escape after putting up a struggle. It also claimed that a pistol and machete were spotted in the vehicle and warned people to be wary.

"Following our investigation into the alleged claim, we found that the teenage girl, who is also the complainant, has fabricated the whole thing.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.

"Her motive of doing so was to simply attract attention of her parents as we found also that she has some personal issues with her parents," he told a press conference at the district police headquarters here, on Friday.
