Another arrest; trio are remanded

Kota Kinabalu: Three Sabah youth leaders from two political parties whose five-day remand ended Saturday, had their remand extended by another three days.This is to facilitate an on-going probe by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC into alleged abuse of RM1.5 billion in Federal funds meant for rural development projects over a period of six years in the State.

Senior Assistant Registrar Mohamad Aizat Abdul Rahim siting as a Magistrate at the Kota Kinabalu Court here issued the remand order, Saturday, following an application from MACC Investigating Officer Mohd Faliq Basirudin who applied for seven days each.

A youth leader from an opposition political party was represented by its leading counsel Martin Tommy with its co-counsel Darell Leiking, Loretto Padua Jr. Cerdric Choo and Norazmi Alimat.

While two youths leaders from a component party in Barisan Nasional (BN) whereby one from Tenom was represented by Arthur Borine, Shahlan Jufri and Mohd Azhier Farhan Arisin while counsel Hamid Ismail represented the other youth leader from Tawau. They arrived at the Kota Kinabalu Court house at about 10am and left at 12.40pm on Saturday.

Earlier, MACC arrested a local man, believed to be Hamid Apdal's son-in-law.

The 33-year-old businessman, who is the husband of Hamid's eldest daughter, was arrested at the MACC office here.

He was there to assist in the MACC's investigation into the alleged misappropriation of funds from rural development projects in Sabah these past four days.

MACC deputy chief commissioner Azam Baki confirmed the arrest when contacted but declined to comment further.

The arrest was the eighth by the anti-graft agency in two weeks.

Meanwhile, a local businessman who was remanded to assist in the same allegation of misappropriation of Federal funds meant for rural development projects in the State was released on Saturday with MACC bail of RM200,000 with RM100,000 deposited and two sureties.

He was earlier remanded for five days from Oct 6 until Oct 10 but his remand was extended for another four days beginning Oct 11 which ended Saturday.

They were among seven individuals who have been detained and remanded, so far, comprising four politicians, two local businessmen and a former senior officer with a Federal ministry to facilitate current investigations into the same allegation.

Among the seven, a vice-president of an opposition party was released on a MACC bail of RM50,000 undeposited with two sureties on Friday (Oct 13) after his extension of remand ended the same day (Oct 13).

He was earlier remanded for five days from Oct 6 until Oct 10.

Another local businessman cum a younger brother of an opposition leader was remanded for five days effective Wednesday (Oct 11) that will ends on Monday (Oct 16). - Hayati Dzulkifli
