PETALING JAYA: The 'Sayang Malaysia, Hapuskan Kleptokrasi' (Love Malaysia, Eradicate Kleptocracy) organised by Pakatan Harapan at Padang Timur Saturday failed to achieve its target when the number of participants fell far below the 100,000 mark. The rally which began at 4pm until late night was attended by 25,000 participants, as announced by the organisers.

However according to Selangor Police Chief Datuk Mazlan Mansor, there were only 4,000 participants.

He added that the situation at the rally was under control.

Among the opposition leaders who were present were chairman of Pakatan Harapan Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Pakatan Harapan president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, DAP advisor Lim Kit Siang, Amanah president Mohamad Sabu and Parti Pribumi Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

The opposition leaders harped on the alleged embezzlement of 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) funds and the Goods and Services Tax.

They also called for change.

Bernama also saw children who had been brought by their parents to the rally.

Last Wednesday, the Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun did not allow the gathering to be held on the basis of security.

The rally marked the end of a three-month nationwide roadshow.

Several participants said they were hoping that a change in government would mean an end to the current economic hardship they are enduring.

Meanwhile, former Election Commission chairman Abdul Rashid Abdul Rahman said he was putting together a team to stop any attempts at cheating at the next general election.

Addressing participants at the rally, Rashid, who is now part of PPBM, said there were many ways to cheat at the polls.

"But as long as I'm in the frontline, I won't allow this to happen," he told the gathering.

Rashid, who is also PPBM vice-president, claimed only the top brass of the civil service supported Barisan Nasional (BN).
