Kota Marudu: Sekolah Kebangsaan Sunsui pupils will be all smiles soon with the construction of a hostel, the sixth for rural schools here.Apart from encouraging attendance to school, Kota Marudu Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili said the hostel would also provide better learning environment for the pupils.
"The school is providing education to pupils in seven nearby villages, so constructing a hostel will keep the pupils closer to school," he explained.
Speaking after inspecting the school, he said similar facility has been built in other schools here in the last four years under the sponsorship of the Albukhary Foundation.
Ongkili, who is also Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister, said under the government policy, hostels are only provided to schools with high-density students.
"But it is not applicable to rural schools in Kota Marudu because we need such facility here.
"Besides, since we set up hostels in the four schools, the pupils' Ujian Penilaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) results have improved tremendously," he said.
On another development, he called on private sector and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to help out in boosting education and its facilities in the district.
"At the same time, the Governments need to continue supporting on other things such as food supply and upgrading works to allow better learning environment to students. It is a good synergy," he said.
