Prostitution: Indonesian woman fined RM8,000

Kota Kinabalu: A 36-year-old Indonesian woman was fined RM8,000 or six months' jail by the Magistrate's Court, Friday, for prostitution.Fironika Gunawan pleaded guilty before High Court Senior Assistant Registrar Herlina Muse, who sat as a magistrate, to committing the offence in a hotel room along Jalan Coastal, here, at 9.40pm on Dec 11.Inspector Albert Basiri, prosecuting, told the court that police raided the room following a tip-off and found a woman, later identified as Fironika, together with a male customer in it.

Fironika was then arrested.She had committed an offence under Section 372B of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to one year or fine, or both, on conviction.Fironika, who was not represented, requested to be fined and not jailed on the grounds that she has four children.Albert applied for an appropriate sentence.

Meanwhile, in the Sessions Court, two Filipinos were jailed for staying in the State illegally.Nuar Jamsi, 21, and Noorwahida Mijal, 26, admitted before Sessions Court Judge Ainul Shahrin Mohamad to committing the offence here, respectively, on Nov 27 and Dec 7.

The court ordered them to be referred to the Immigration Department after serving their sentences.Nuar and Noorwahida were charged under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63, which provides a jail term of up to five years, or a fine of up to RM10,000, on conviction. - Jo Ann Mool
