Lai to captain national squad

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah's Lai Wen Li has been given the captain's armband for the national women's squad in the 19th Asian Team Championships starting today (Wednesday) until Sunday (March 25) in Cheongju, South Korea.It will be the first time she is competing in the event and the team with fellow members Ma Si Yi, Chan Yiwen and Ooi Kah Yan will start their Group B match against China today. They will next play Chinese Taipei tomorrow morning followed by Iran in the afternoon before their final two group matches with Singapore and Japan on Friday.

Meanwhile, Lai shined at the recent Malaysian Squash Tour VII 2018 held in Sarawak from March 14-16.

The 18-year-old, who was seeded seventh, managed to reach the semi-final stage in the professional tournament before losing out to second seed Ineta Mackevica from Latvia in four sets 8-11, 10-12, 11-9, 5-11.

She had earlier defeated fourth seed Sunayna Kuruvilla from India 11-6, 8-11, 11-9, 11-9 in the last eight.

Unseeded Jessica Keng also did well when she upset sixth seed Arezoosadat Mousavizadeh of Iran in the opening round to reach the quarterfinal before a straight sets 7-11, 12-14, 6-11 loss to Ineta.

Mohd Farez Izwan was the other player who made it past the qualifying round but he was stopped in the first round by national teammate and second seed Sanjay Singh in four sets 2-11, 11-2, 6-11, 4-11. – GL Oh
