Lion Dance master killed, wife and son hurt in mishap

Kota Kinabalu: A 59-year-old Lion Dance 'sifu' (master) died while his wife and son sustained severe and light injuries when the Ford Ranger they were travelling in was involved in a self-accident at the Telipok Ria roundabout, along the Kota Kinabalu-Tuaran road, here, Tuesday.It was learned that the victim, identified as Thong Chung Wai, was heading from Manggatal to Sandakan with his 19-year-old son and wife, in her 50s, at around 4am. The wife is a teacher at SM Shan Tao, Likas, and they were believed to be heading to Sandakan for the school holidays.

When they reached the Telipok Ria roundabout, the victim rammed into the roundabout and caused the vehicle to skid.Led by operations officer Mohd Zairul Amir Jaffar, a team of six firefighters with two fire engines rushed to the scene, 9km away, upon receiving a distress call at 4.29am.According to the operations officer, the victim was extricated by firefighters as he was stuck in the driver's seat. However, he was pronounced dead by paramedics and was handed over to police.

The wife suffered injuries to her back and the son sustained light injuries. They were extricated by members of the public and sent to the hospital before firefighters arrived.
