Robbery: 19-year-old gets 8 years, rotan

Kota Kinabalu: A 19-year-old was sentenced to eight years' jail and one stroke of the cane for robbing a 16-year-old boy of his handphone.Sessions Court Judge Noor Hafizah Mohd Salim handed the sentence to Julbin Azli who maintained his plea of guilty when his social report from the Welfare Department was tendered in court, Friday.Julbin had robbed Noel Junior Paulus, 16, of the handphone at 3.20pm on Feb 26 at a pond near the construction at Servay hypermarket, Putatan.

During the incident, Julbin together with another accused Mohd Fazly Juineh, 19, who claimed trial to the charge, used a machete.The offence under Section 395/397 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to 20 years, and whipping, on conviction.The court ordered Julbin to serve the jail sentence from the date of his arrest and fixed June 26-27 to hear Fazly's case.Julbin, who was not represented, asked for leniency.

However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Dinesh Raja urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence.The court heard that while Noel and his two friends were swimming at the pond, two unknown men approached them.
