SEPANG: National table tennis coach, Beh Lee Wei hopes two of her charges would not rest on their laurels following their surprise bronze medal feat at the recent 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in Australia.Beh, a former national paddler, has instead urged Ho Ying and newcomer, Karen Lyne to step up their efforts to a better level and keep training hard to become better players in the future.

"Actually, they have skills but lack experience playing at international level.

I hope after their brilliant performance at the Commonwealth Games, they can go even higher, especially Karen who has a lot of potential," she said.

She was speaking to reporters when met upon arrival with the national table tennis squad at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (klia2) from Gold Coast earlier Tuesday.

Beh said by winning the bronze medal, it indirectly silenced criticism by certain quarters who doubted the capability of her younger players to deliver positive results.

She said the players would shift their attention to the 2018 World Table Tennis Championships at month-end in Sweden before heading to Bangkok, Thailand for the five-day Thailand Junior and Cadet Open Tournament, beginning May 9.

"We will send all paddlers who featured in the Commonwealth Games to give them major exposure playing against the top ranked players, so that they can improve their performance in the future," she added.

Ho-Karen won the surprise bronze medal in the women's doubles by defeating India's M. Sutirtha-S. Pooja; 15-13, 11-7, 8-11 and 11-7.

Earlier, they stunned Australia's reigning silver medallists, Miao Miao-Lay Jian Fang in the quarter-finals before losing to India's top pair, Manika Batra-Mouma Das in the semi-finals. – Bernama
