Labuan karatekas emerge runners-up

Labuan: Labuan karatekas showed their prowess by winning six golds at the just-concluded Kota Kinabalu Karate Open Championship 2018 held at SM Lok Yuk Hall.The squad also bagged four silver and seven bronze medals to finish in second place overall in the three-day event held from April 20-22.

The event was participated by 650 karatekas participants from Labuan, Sabah, Sarawak, Brunei, Philippines, India, Bangladesh and Indonesia.

Labuan karate contingent coach Shihan Aswadee said the squad's achievement was inspiring and that they would continue to polish their athletes for future competitions.

"Labuan team sent out 18 youth athletes to this championship for exposure, with most of the them are newcomers in the karate championship.

The Labuan team members were aged between six and 18.

The gold medals came from Muhammad Aiqal Asmadie in the Individual Kata Male Cadet 14-15 Years, Sam Hiang Fong (Individual Kumite Female-68kg), Daniel Dean (Individual Kumite Male Cadet 14-15 Years -57kg), Adib Abdullah Mohd Dzulfadly (Individual Kumite Boys 12-13 Years-40kg), Nur Aneesa Aira Mohamad Affendi (Individual Kumite Girls 10-11 Years -30kg) and Diya Khalish Kasryanto (Individual Kumite Girls 8-9 Years +25kg).

The silvers were bagged by Muhammad Aiqal Asmadie in the Individual Kumite Cadet 14-15 Years -52kg, Sam Hiang Fong (Individual Kata Female), Prince Ferral (Individual Kata Boys 6-8 Years) and Kaszym Aqim Kasryanto (Individual Kumite Boys 10-11 Years +35kg).

The seven bronzes were contributed by Zacchaeus Dunang Jerangku (Individu Kumite Boys 12-13 Years +40kg), Nur Ariesya Dayana Asmadie (Individual Kata 6-8 Years and (Individual Kumite 5-7 Years), Emmanuel Dunang Jerangku (Individual Kata Boys 9-10 Years), Prince Ferral (Individual Kumite 5-7 Years), Amber Jelzabelle Jinugi (Individual Kumite 10-11 Years +30kg) and Muhammad Isyraf Faiz Muhammad Ismifarizal and Individual Kumite 10-11 Years +35kg.

Shihan commended the contribution of all the athletes for the good reputation of Labuan karate sports development.
