SKA eye title defence, 10 golds

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Karate Association (SKA) are targeting 10 gold medals and to defend their overall title at the 28th National Cadet, Junior and Under-21 Karate Championship to be held in Ipoh, Perak from June 22-24.They will be represented by 45 athletes with 24 male and 21 female for the three-day competition.

SKA President Datuk Jake Nointin, who handed the State flag to the contingent at the main dojo on Tuesday, challenged the athletes to do better than they achieved last year where they won a total of nine gold medals.

"Our aim is obviously to keep the overall crown but I would like to see them do one better by winning 10 gold medals this time around.

"There are 20 Sukma athletes in the team and hopefully they can win four golds with three from kumite and one from kata while the rest of the juniors athletes can deliver at least six kumite titles and one kata title," he said.

He also reminded those who take up the sport on the prospect of making it as their career in the future.

"I would like to see karate develop further in the State and those who are taking the sport can also count on the support by us. Karate is no longer just hobby but it can also make a career for oneself," he stressed.

The contingent which started their intensive training on the first day of Hari Raya will be spearheaded by SEA Games silver medallist Pressy Misty Philip competing in the female Under-21 category together with Vellcarollyne Agustine, Alexandra Jacklya Dakius, Gwendollyn Gimus, Machelle Roger Mool and Allyvianna Appolony.

The male under 21 athletes are Clevelence Carlos, Zimito Jipui Jr, Stanley Dulian, Al Nasrin Faisal, Richal Mattan, Mcroyce Donovan Dagul, Elreno Zeru, Arthuric Gideon Jiwin, Whaledent Joe Walter and Kellyment Kahan.

In the junior categories, the female athletes are Olevia Demius, Esther Bell Siaw, Elyanna Chrisma Jupin, Nur Ayeen, Juslin Juman,Dg Nur Izzati Salem, Mary Velendra Godfrey, Maryam Jackson, Cairola Chevery Wong, Abby Lysha Abiezarly while the males are Josvin Jase, Reyhon Handeri, Carl Pearson Philip, Bradwales Wong, Alvin Tam, Mohd Zuhair Zulkifli Zainal.

Those taking part in the cadet categories are Lovelly Anne Robberth, Alysheron Maunsiong, Prosca Easther Philip, Leong Jia Chii , Muchell Michelin Linus for the females and Mohd Azhad Haziq Henry, Eldrich Aaron Jubili, Mohd Zaidan Zainal, Arthur Adrian Angkangon, Muhd Aiman Azlan, Ivan Charles, Muhd Rafiuddin Faiz Razmi, Franz Evans Fancey Sami for the males.

The delegation left early this morning was led by SKA Secretary General Julian Chin who is also the head coach.

The other coaches are Egyptian Nustafa Elsayed Mohd Elsnbawy, Denny Fredoline, Audrey Japyus, Farlin Veroney Fredrick and Andy Alexious Agkagon while the team manager is Iskhandar Damis assisted by Joanna Joitol. - GL Oh
