Tawau: The Tawau Indonesian Consulate welcomed the State Government's plan to revive barter trade activities which was ceased in 2016 due to security reasons.Tawau Indonesian Consul Sulistijo Djati Ismojo said he is confident that such measure will benefit countries neighbouring Malaysia like Indonesia, especially in the economic and trade sector.

"Ever since barter trading was halted, there is a decrease of trading activities between Tawau and Tarakan-Nunukan in Northern Kalimantan which lead to economic slowdown," he said when met at the Hari Raya celebration hosted by him and his wife Irawati Djati, at the Wisma Indonesie, here, Thursday.

He added that the State government's announcement was forwarded to Jakarta on Thursday by their economic officials.

"We have yet to receive any response from Jakarta, but I am confident that they too, will hope barter trading is being revived as it benefits the communities at the borders of both countries."

He is confident that barter trade activities will enhance the development potentials of other sectors in the BIMP-EAGA and Sosek-Malindo areas.

Djati also thanked Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal for the announcement.

Shafie, on Thursday was reported as saying that the State Government is considering reviving barter trade in Sabah, involving the Philippines and Indonesia with several landing ports in Kudat, Sandakan, Lahad Datu and Tawau. - Lagatah Toyos
