Unfinished business awaits Liew at Law Ministry
Kota Kinabalu: Batu Sapi Member of Parliament Datuk Liew Vui Keong (pic) is making a comeback to the Federal Cabinet where he will deal with some unfinished business involving law reforms. He is speculated to be appointed as Law Minister next week.

As widely speculated, he and two other Sabahan Members of Parliament will be sworn into office by the Agong at Istana Negara on Monday.

The appointment capped a stunning comeback by the Kota Belud born 58-year-old politician who served as deputy law minister under the previous government before losing his Sandakan seat in the 13th general election in 2013.

Prior to holding the post, he had briefly served as Deputy Minister of International Trade and Industry in former Prime Minister Tun Abdullah Badawi's Cabinet in 2009.

Liew was also Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) President for eight years but parted ways with the former state BN component following a leadership crisis.

When his political career seemed to be over, the lawyer and father of four joined Parti Warisan Sabah and was made its Permanent Chairman.

He was then chosen as candidate for Batu Sapi in the 14th general election under his party ticket and won the seat with a 4,619 majority.

Liew is arguably the first politician to have made a comeback between different political parties and governments.

When serving as Deputy Law Minister and Parliamentary Affairs in the Prime Minister's Department, Liew played a key role in reforming a number of laws in the country including the Internal Security Act (ISA) and the Restricted Residence Act 1933 (Act 377).

Both laws were subsequently repealed in 2011. Now that he is expected to be appointed full minister by the new Pakatan Harapan government and again in charge of laws, Liew expects to continue his unfinished work in looking into law reforms in the new Malaysia.

It has been speculated that Penampang MP Darell Leiking and Silam MP Mohamaddin Ketapi will also be sworn in as full ministers on Monday.

Darell will hold the post of Minister of International Trade and Industry while Mohamaddin as Minister of Tourism and Culture.

Two other Sabahans MPs, Isnaraissah Munirah Majilis (Kota Belud) and Mohd Azis Jamman will be appointed deputy ministers. Both of them were regarded as "giant killers" as they unseated the Umno Sabah supremo Salleh Ketuak and Rahman Dahlan in the recently concluded GE-14. Both were key ministers in the previous Najib administration.

It has been speculated that Azis will be deputy home minister while party colleague Isnaraissah Munirah to deputise in the Ministry of Energy, Technology, Science, Climate change, and Environment.
