RM4k fine for insulting cop on Facebook

Kota Kinabalu: A self-employed local who uploaded a status in his Facebook account with an intention to humiliate a policeman was jailed a day and fined RM4,000 or three months jail.Zakrin Bidin, 41, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Cindy Mc Juce Balitus to committing the offence against Halid Nurmin at 6.12pm at the office of Investigations and Enforcement Division in the Traffic Headquarters, here, on July 4.Inspector Albert Basiri, prosecuting, told the court that the complainant, ASP Daniel Dominic received a message in a WhatsApp group regarding a Facebook account under the name of one 'Kingken Ken', who uploaded a photo of a piece of traffic summon at 4.38pm on July 4, and wrote comments intending to insult the modesty of the police personnel.

The summon for obstructing traffic at Jalan Lintas, which was issued earlier on the same day, has Halid's signature on it, said Albert.Zakrin Ali apologised to the court, adding that he realised his mistake.He applied not to be jailed and requested for a fine only, saying that he had been under remand for a week and has many dependants.Albert applied for an appropriate sentence.

Zakrin was charged under Section 509 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to five years or fine or both on conviction.In another case, two men were penalised after they admitted to having syabu.
