New State Library in Tg Aru to open early next year
Kota Kinabalu: The new 62,000 square feet State Library building in Tanjung Aru is slated to be opened to the public early next year.State Library Director Wong Vui Yin said the building has been completed but its interior design is still in progress.

He said the library would incorporate ICT technology and constantly update its collection of books.

"When completed, the public will be able to gain knowledge as well as enjoy the new experience of using the library's new digital technologies.

"This digital tech feature will play a huge part in attracting the locals as we are bringing in electronic tablets, computers and touch-screen televisions.

"Users will be able to access a huge array of e-books, e-magazines and other reading materials that may not be available in printed form," he said attending after the Education and Innovation Ministry Aidilfitri open house at Wisma Bandaraya, here, Thursday.

Wong said once the six-storey State Library building is opened, five floors are accessible for the public while the other is closed for staff of the library.

He encouraged the public to visit the library once it is opened as they will be greeted with a rustic and contemporary interior design not seen anywhere else in the State.

"I hope the people will be more motivated and energetic to visit the library once it is completed and operational," he said.

Wong also revealed that the State Library in the Suria Sabah Shopping Mall would be relocated to the new courthouse complex when it is operational.

"It is considered an upgrade as the size of the library in the shopping mall is only 6,000 square feet, while the library at the courthouse will occupy 10,000 square feet.

"The shopping mall's library will remain open to the public until we are able to relocate to the courthouse to serve the people around the city centre," he said.

Also present at the event were Education and Innovation Minister Datuk Dr Yusof Yacob, Assistant Ministers Mohammad Mohamarin and Jennifer Lasimbang, Permanent Secretary Datuk Bruno Vun and State Education Director Datuk Maimunah Suhaibul. - Locksley Ng
