Kota Kinabalu: Chief Minister Shafie Apdal has denounced Umno and PAS for bringing up race and religion in objecting to the appointment of Richard Malanjum as head of the judiciary. He reminded the opposition that even Brunei, with a population of more than 90pc Muslims, had just appointed a non-Muslim, Steven Chong Wang Oon, as chief justice of the country's Supreme Court.

Brunei was not only a Muslim-majority country but one that provided for hudud criminal punishments.

Shafie said opposition parties should not harp on race and religion. Malanjum, Chief Judge of the Sabah and Sarawak High Court, was appointed because of his experience and capabilities.

"We all know there were a lot of problems with our judicial system in the previous government and someone needs to clean house. We are very confident Malanjum is the man to do this, not because he is a Sabahan but because we are confident of his abilities," he said.

Shafie also said it was proper to link Malanjum's appointment to demands over fulfilling the terms of the Malaysia Agreement 1963.

He thanked the federal government and the Yang di-Pertuan Agong for assenting to the appointment, as this was recognition of citizens from East Malaysia.

Malanjum was sworn in as the ninth chief justice on July 11, becoming the first person from the Borneo states to be elevated to the highest judicial office.
