Pitas: The Sabah Ministry of Rural Development (KPLB) will discuss with its federal counterpart to determine the status of several rural development projects in the State, including the Rural Electricity Supply Programme (BELB), which were planned by the previous government. Its Minister Ewon Benedick said this is important to ensure that rural development programmes, including those involving basic facilities such as the Rural Water Supply Programme (BALB), Rural Road Programme (JALB) and BELB truly benefit the rural community in the State.

"In a recent discussion with federal KPLB Minister Rina Mohd Harun, we agreed that there needs to be information sharing, understanding and close co-operation between our ministries to facilitate the implementation of rural development programmes.

"I have asked for all District Officers throughout Sabah to inform me of development projects funded by the previous government that did not go through Sabah KPLB.

"This is so that Sabah KPLB can co-ordinate the programmes implemented or planned by federal KPLB for rural communities in the State," he told reporters during a working visit to Kampung Kobon, here, Friday.

On Friday and Saturday, Ewon visited Kota Marudu and Pitas to survey the performance of KPLB programmes, including a rubber Mini Estet Sejahtera (Mesej) in Kg Kotud, Kota Marudu, a palm oil Mesej in Kg Tukar, Pitas, a burung walit Mesej in Kg Kiandut, Pitas and the "Kampung Sejahtera" programme in Kg Kobon.

Regarding basic facilities such as roads and electricity supply in Kampung Kobon, Ewon said his ministry will pay attention to the matter.

He said his Ministry will carry out maintenance and upgrading works on a two-kilometre road leading into Kampung Kobon through the "Kampung Sejahtera" allocation.

"As for electricity supply in rural areas, we will take appropriate action on Kampung Kobon and 23 other villages in the Pitas District.

"I was made to understand that the application for BELB in all the villages had already been forwarded to the federal KPLB before this and there had already been a commitment by the previous government," he said.

In relation to this, he said it is his responsibility as the Sabah KPLB Minister to follow up and discuss with the federal KPLB to review the commitments that they had given before this.

Also present were State Rural Development Assistant Minister Dumi Pg Masdal, Pitas Assemblyman Datuk Bolkiah Ismail, State KPLB Deputy Permanent Secretary Sualim Sanan and Pitas District Officer Bubudan OT Majalu.
