Kota Kinabalu: Canadian High Commissioner in Malaysia Julia Bently paid a courtesy call on Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal, here, Monday. According to Bently, the visit was to enhance trade, education and cooperation relations between Canada and Sabah.

"Canada hopes to work with the Sabah Government in infrastructure, energy, information and communications technology, water treatment and waste and many more because Canada has expertise in these areas.

"In addition, we also offer the Canada – Asean Scholarships and Educational Exchanges for Development (Seed) for short-term learning.

"This scholarship was first set up for the first time this year for students from Asean and I am very happy that a total of 13 students from Malaysia have been selected to receive the scholarship," she said.

She said Canada also offers Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI) to non-governmental organisations and local organisations to implement small-scale projects.

She pointed out among the areas of focus in the CFLI is empowerment of women and girls, environment and sustainable development as well as native rights. Those who wish to know more about the scholarships and grants can go to www.malaysia.gc.ca.

This was Bently's first visit to Sabah after taking office in October, last year.
