Kota Kinabalu: Airline companies that increase ticket prices for flights to Sabah's East Coast go against the State Government's plan in promoting the area. State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Christina Liew said although the Government understands that it is how commercial aviation runs its business, airline companies need to support the government by making flights to the East Coast more affordable.

She said State Government is aware of the high ticket charges by some airlines during holidays and long weekends.

"Since the State Government is actively promoting the East Coast of Sabah, we would like the airlines to be more supportive of our move by making the travel more affordable. Increasing the price does not go hand-in-hand with the Government's plan," Liew said.

Liew added that the public can also avoid expensive flights by planning their travels at least three months ahead or choose the non-holiday season.

Costly ticket prices to Sabah, especially to the East Coast, were said to be the case during the September long weekend break.

The Minister said that developing the East Coast as the second tourism hub needs the strong support from all sectors.

"As I have mentioned before we need to develop the tourism industry throughout Sabah, not just in Kota Kinabalu," Liew reiterated.
