Kota Kinabalu: The State Government is looking into streamlining the process of granting development approvals to ensure end users benefit not only from the shortened time but also reduced cost. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal said it was high time to look into a new kind of scheme or system to ensure no delay in the process in addition to cutting cost.

"We have a Central Board which has been due for us to be dismantled. I think a shorter period in granting approval should be in place," he told a media conference at the Magellan Sutera Resort, Thursday in response to a question.

"This is one of the areas we are looking into and basically I think we have done quite a bit there, give us time and I think sooner it will be there onboard for us to announce that," he said.

On who will have the authority to approve projects later, he said that is one of the aspects they are going to streamline.

"There is an overlapping of roles and responsibilities that we need to streamline.

"The faster you give the approval, more money that you can generate into the economy.

"This is more important to me, whether I have to decentralise that or delegate that to someone else… what is important is it functions well and would cost less," he added. During the media conference, he was also asked about the progress on a study done by the previous government regarding strata titles.

The previous government in 2016 announced that they are looking into relevant laws to come up with a solution to the issue of home owners having to wait a long time to get their strata titles.

Shafie assured they are going to deal with it sooner.

"We have a committee which involve some professionals as well as the government outfit to deal with it sooner," he assured. On another note, Shafie is delighted that things have changed a lot in the 100 days since Pakatan Harapan under the leadership of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad took over as the new Federal Government.

"I think it is for the better and I am quite sure that under the leadership of Dr Mahathir, a man with vast experience, the country is under the right hand and I think we will be moving forward to ensure that the country will not only be progressing well but also run well," he said.

"The world knows who Dr Mahathir is, I think he knows where he is going and I think he has the passion for the country.

"What is more important I think as Malaysians we have to give him the fullest support possible to ensure the betterment of the country and the people," he said. - Sherell Jeffrey
