Miti's engaging Thai business figures to attract more investments

BANGKOK: The International Trade and Industry Ministry (Miti) is engaging Thai prominent business figures as it seek ways to lure them into increasing their investments in Malaysia.Its Minister, Darell Leiking said Malaysia's new government was pro-business and welcomed foreign investments that were mutually beneficial.

"We (Malaysia) needs to look at re-strategising what we already have with Thailand. We would like to bring industry leaders to look at Malaysia (as an investment destination)," he told Bernama in an interview here on Friday.

The Minister arrived in Bangkok on Thursday to begin a three-day working visit where he is scheduled to meet the country's captains of industries.

Thailand is Malaysia's fifth largest trading partner globally and second largest in Asean.

Top of the list of Darell's packed scheduled in Bangkok would be a courtesy call on Thailand's Commerce Minister Sontirat Sontijirawong at his office.

He is also slated to have a dinner-cum-meeting with Thai Charoen Corporation Group (TCC) Chairman Tan Sri Charoen Sirivadhanabakdi, where both parties are expected to discuss potential investments by the conglomerate in Malaysia.

He declined to divulge details on the potential new investment by TCC in Malaysia until it has been confirmed, but added that the government was focused in attracting credible and genuine investments.

Charoen is one of the richest in Thailand, while TCC is among the largest conglomerates in Thailand. Its business empire spans various countries worldwide, including Malaysia.

Darell will also be meeting Federation of Thai Industries members and founder of AAPICO Founder Yeap Swee Chuan, as well as holding a dialogue with the Malaysia-Thai Chambers of Commerce (MTCC) and Malaysians residing in Thailand.

He said Miti would also be meeting Thai industrialists and business leaders who could make changes to both Thailand and Malaysia.

"We want to pick the right people to work with and we are glad people like Tan Sri Charoen has welcome us," he said, adding that the government has been working very hard to revive Malaysia's glory days when it was rated one of "Asian Tigers".
