Sabah clinch  Team Nett title
Kota Kinabalu: Sabah senior golfers emerged champions in the Team Nett category of the recent 11th Pan Borneo Senior Amateur Open Golf Championship held at Damai Golf and Country Club in Kuching, Sarawak.Senior Golfers' Association of Sabah (SGAS) President Datuk Claudius Roman said they won the team nett title with a total score of 1,387 strokes against Sarawak's 1,401 and Brunei's 1,405.

Claudius, who scored 134, topped the list of Sabah's best 10 senior golfers whom contributed for the Team Nett category win followed by Boljen Majingin with 135, Datuk Joannes Solidau (136), Dardie @ Paul Sawal (138), Donni Intung (139), Edmund Lo (140), Danny Chua with 141 strokes together with Datuk Verus A. Sham (141) and Tham Yen Enn (141), and Yu Yuen Guan (142).

"We were very pleased when the Sabah senior golfers were announced as the winner for the Team Nett category in this 36-hole championship held for two days, recently.

"Everybody has worked hard to do well in the tournament and did their best to make Sabah proud," he said to Daily Express here after returning from the championship recently.

Senior Golfers Society of Sarawak organised the 11th Pan Borneo Senior Amateur Open Golf Championship in Santubong, Kuching in which the senior golfers association of Sabah, Sarawak and Brunei Darussalam would take turns to organise the senior amateur open championship in their respective places.

Claudius said Sabah finished in third place with 1,692 strokes for the Team Gross category where Sarawak's clinched the winning team gross title with 1,662 strokes against second placed Brunei's 1,688 strokes.

Nonetheless, he said Sabah claimed more honours as Donni Intung won the individual gross category when he scored 155 strokes over two days of play while a Brunei golfer Patera Madil won second place and third place went to a Sarawak player Abdul Aziz Sahari.

In the individual nett category, he said senior golfer Sarawak deputy president Anthony Tan came first place with a two-day total of 128 defeating second place Dillah Ahmad by a single stroke and Kenny Law Keng Yang secured third place with 133.

In the same category, Claudius said he secured fourth place with 134 while the fifth to 10th place finishers were Boljen Majingin (135), Datuk Joannes Solidau (136), Dardie @ Paul Sawal (138 On Count Back (OCB)), Yakop Jalel (138 OCB), Louis Yong Lin Lin (138 OCB) and Simon Woon Ta Meng.

He said Senior Golfers Society of Sarawak President Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan Hong Nam, the former Sarawak Deputy Chief Minister closed the event and gave away the main prizes.

"Each team from Sabah, Sarawak and Brunei put 40 participants for this 11th Pan Borneo championship.

"From Sabah, some of the Sabah senior golfers who participated are Deputy Speaker Datuk George Ginibun cum SGAS Deputy President, organising chairman for Sabah Contingent cum Vice-President SGAS Paul Nointien, our secretary-general James Mandasa, our treasurer-general Victor Mosoom, team Captain Joseph Roman, Lady Captain Datin Colorita, a committee member Harry Beatty and other senior golfers.

"Other senior golfers included Datuk Joannes Solidau, Datuk Verus A. Sham, Datuk Vincent Fernandez, Datuk Dr Dayu Sansalu, Datuk Mohd Zain Mohd Said, Datuk Philip Lasimbang, Datuk Jaimin Samitah, Datuk Andy Chua, Datuk Saidon Kadis, Barahim Taliban, Adnan Jaud, Arius Jupiu, Hj. Julian Gugau, Jusli Potoh, Placidus Marcellinus, Ajisni Duali, Suhaidi Jahim, Kamlun Pasal, Ariffin Dtk Hj. F. Wong, Freddy Lee, Amran Muntoh, Edmund Lo, Danny Chua, Michael Liaw, Julius J. Gala, Yunus @ Yusadita Said, Christopher Ligadu and Suhati @ Suatin Bin Mahyur @ Mayor," he said.

Claudius said the Senior Golfers' Association of Sabah expressed total gratitude to the State's Youth and Sports Ministry particularly the Minister Frankie Poon Ming Fung for their contribution in supporting the championship.

He said he hoped such good cooperation and guidance would be continued in the next 12th championship to be hosted by Sabah here next year.

Claudius also thanked all the participants of the championship and their sporting spirit as well as the organising chairman Paul Nointien and his committee for successful running of the championship. - Hayati Dzulkifli
