New medical services for East Coast

Sandakan: The State Government is committed to upgrade health facilities in both urban and rural areas in the State.Chief Minister Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal said health is an important factor in building a great nation.

"After being appointed as the Chief Minister, I have observed that there is a need to focus on health issues in Sabah which is why the Ministry of Health and People's Wellbeing was created.

"The ministry led by Datuk Stephen Wong is now playing a vital role in inspecting health facilities as well as tackling various health-related issues, including hospital facilities and so forth.

"As for the district of Sandakan, there is a need to have health facilities and expertise which will greatly facilitate the locals," he said when officiating the new Radiology Building at Hospital Duchess of Kent (HDOK), Monday.

The RM7.6 million building provides CT Scans, mammograms, fluoroscopy and ultrasound services.

"With the upgrading of the Duchess of Kent Hospital, residents in five districts in Sabah's East Coast will no longer have to travel far to get quality medical treatment," said Shafie, adding that it would benefit residents in Sandakan, Beluran, Kinabatangan and central districts of Tongod and Telupid, among others.

"Previously, those outside of Kota Kinabalu had to travel hours to get these treatments and services but now, the journey can be cut short," he said, after the event.

The building would go a long way to help reduce travel expenses for those outside of Kota Kinabalu.

"The Government will continuously make sure that the welfare of the people is taken care of," Shafie said.

He urged hospital staff and the public to help ensure that the facilities and machines were taken care of properly.

"In the end, we want to make sure that everyone in Sabah gets quality medical services regardless of where they are," he said.

Hence, collaboration and close relationship between the State and Federal governments was crucial, Shafie said.

The Radiology Building started operations on Aug 7 with 917 patients benefiting from it services as of Sept 18.

Also present during the event were Sabah Health and Wellbeing Minister Datuk Stephen Wong Tien Fatt, State Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Frankie Poon and State Health Department Director Datuk Dr Christina Rundi.
